Owning a home computer nowadays makes you more vulnerable to scams and confidence tricks than anybody been subjected to in living memory.
These are my top tips to avoid being scammed via your computer.
- If you get cold called and told there is a problem with your computer - HANG UP! – these scammers will try tell you that you have a fault with your computer and that you must let them remote control it to solve the problem, then they have access to your system which is bad news!
- A nice usually god fearing person you have never heard of emails you to tell you that you have inherited some money, won a lottery you haven’t entered, or they need your help in getting someone’s money out of a country and all they need is some cash up front to make the transaction happen - it’s a scam don’t even reply to it to tell them to get lost (it just shows your email address works).
- You get an email from a parcel delivery company or the royal mail telling you they tried to deliver a parcel and would you please open the attachment to rearrange delivery– I recently had to completely wipe a pc due to the Trojan that this scam places on your computer.
- Your bank asks you for your login details – your bank will never do this! Be very suspicious of these emails, I ignore them all!
In fact even if my bank phones me up and it’s not the dulcet tones of my very helpful Business Manager I refuse to speak to them until I call them back on a number know to be correct so I can see if its really my bank.
- PayPal emails you and asks you to confirm details – don’t! they just don’t ask that sort of thing by email 99% it will be a scam.
There seems to be an entire army of people out there trying to con the innocent computer user and some of the most job satisfying calls I get are from customers who smell a rat and call me to check whether the phone call or email they have just received is real or not. Most of the time they are scams and because they phoned us up and checked first I can go about my work a bit happier knowing that I got someone out of the hands of one of these con-men.
